Description
The 7492 is a 4-bit asynchronous binary counter built in TTL logic, internally configured as a divide-by-12 counter. It reaches this division ratio by combining a divide-by-2 stage with a divide-by-6 stage, implemented using four master-slave flip-flops connected to count through a preset sequence.
Because it’s asynchronous, the counter advances on the negative (falling) edge of the clock input, with each internal flip-flop toggling in sequence rather than all switching simultaneously from a shared clock edge — a defining trait of ripple-style asynchronous counters.
Its divide-by-12 output makes it a natural fit for clock-dividing and timing circuits, such as deriving non-power-of-two division ratios (e.g. for clock-face timekeeping logic) from a higher-frequency input clock.
