CD4094 8-stage Shift-and-Store Bus Register

The CD4094 is an 8-stage shift-and-store bus register from the 40xx series CMOS logic family. This device combines an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register with an 8-bit storage latch, allowing data to be shifted in serially and then latched into parallel outputs under separate control. The shift register and storage register can be updated independently, enabling double-buffered output updates without disrupting the shifting process.

Separate clock inputs control the shift register and the storage latch. Data is clocked into the shift register on the rising edge of the shift clock, while a separate strobe input transfers the shift-register contents to the output latch. A serial output allows cascading multiple CD4094 devices into longer shift registers. The CD4094 is widely used in LED displays, keypad scanning, and general-purpose I/O expansion for microcontrollers.
